New Indiana Strength Coach Talks Hot Yoga and Sand Pits

When Lyonel Anderson was announced as the new men’s basketball strength coach at Indiana University last wweek, he joined a program that’s as steeped in tradition as any in the country. But unlike the Hoosiers’ old school candy-striped warmup pants, Anderson’s approach will include some modern touches.

In putting his stamp on the team’s off-season training program, Anderson said he’s looking to include elements such as hot yoga, workouts done while wearing oxygen masks, and sand pit training. The sand pit is currently under construction and will be located just outside of Assembly Hall.

Despite the use of cutting edge training tools, it is his personality that Anderson feels will be his biggest strength. By working side-by-side with players during strength and conditioning work, Anderson is hoping his intensity and energy rub off on the team.

“I feel like the strength coach is a direct reflection of the guys when they get out on the court,” Anderson told the Indianapolis Star. “They will come out of this summer with the edge that I have every day, and I think we’ll win a lot more games that way.”
